A word of advice
Those travelling from southern regions not to follow their Satnav devices onto the A590/A595 which is a tortuous road and use the M6 to Junction40 and then take the A66 and approach Whitehaven from the North. It may not be the shortest route but it is by far the quickest and most comfortable.
